I work somatically, using tools from Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems therapy in concert in my practice. This means that I center the felt sense of the body in my work with clients. Our work together will offer you tools to help you regulate your nervous system, by inviting you to tune into what is happening inside you at the sensation-level.
I also look at each person as a collection of “parts” that might hold different thoughts, feelings and opinions at the same time. Together, we will slowly make contact with these various aspects of your system, and help you build relationships with each of them. IFS believes we all have the capacity to access a grounded, non judgmental internal state it calls the “Self.” When they don’t have relationships with our Self, our parts can be angry, scared and in conflict with each other. Through the process of differentiating from our parts and connecting with each of them from the creative, compassionate space of Self, our different parts become more like trusted advisors working together, rather than frightened or exhausted children attempting to control each other.
I aim to make space for the whole of you, and to consider all of your identities and the ways they intersect. I am committed to continuous interrogation of the privileged identities I hold, especially my white and able-bodied identities. My identities lead to both advantages and limitations in my ability to connect with my clients’ lived experiences. I believe power dynamics of any kind that present in the therapy room deserve to be acknowledged and explored at the right pace for the client, and I work hard to hold myself accountable through frequent training, reading and group consultation.
We will spend considerable time and attention building a trusting relationship with each other, and generally follow your lead in terms of what we focus on in any session. At times, I can be directive when I believe a situation calls for clear guidance. Ultimately, I see therapy as a collaborative process, and I aim to work as a team with you to flexibly address whatever arises. Together, we will design the therapeutic process to meet you where you would like to be met.
